“I want my oatmeal!”

Big T was being a little bratty this morning. (Is it bad to call your own kid bratty? He really was being a pill). Yelling, demanding things, throwing tantrums. I offered him time-out and he said no, thank you. And that seemed to curb his misbehaviour. It was just one of those mornings.

Staying home today. Little T still has a fever and I suspect he will be staying home tomorrow.

Ever have one of those days where you are just TIRED? Well, I just had 3 of them in a row. I am not sure why I feel so worn out. Physically AND mentally. I literally cannot keep my eyes open beyond 10pm. And now, I am completely stressing out because my “I won’t be at work today, my child is sick” email to The Boss was unanswered. Does she think I am slacking off? Is she pissed I am missing a day of work? Usually I get a response along the lines of “I hope he is better soon, take as much time as you need.” This time nothing. ugh. This plus debating whether Little T actually has to go to the hospital has me mentally stressed. Today I am a good mother, but it seems I am a bad employee. That’s how it goes. 🙁

Feel better little one!

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

He was thinking about Cars (the animated movie) and I was thinking about work. So no, Big T, I am not thinking what you’re thinking.

I got the dreaded daycare call today. “Your son has a fever of 101 and you need to pick him up. ” It was Little T. I rushed out of lab without finishing my transformations. I placed them on ice. In hindsight, maybe I should have just finished up before going to get the boys. But I did not want to seem like an irresponsible mother. Soooo, now I am back in lab (it’s almost 8pm) finishing up. Since the child-care place has that 24 hour fever-free rule, I will be home for at least one more day.    🙁     🙂   ?????   Not sure if I should be sad or happy. Sad that Little T is not feeling well (of course), but happy that I get to stay with him all day since I missed him all last week, but sad that I will miss a day of work, but happy that I might accomplish some things while he naps tomorrow…

“Hi Mommy!”

*That was Big T skyping with me*

Yay!!!!! I got to skype. Aaaaahhhhh! I got to see my babies 🙂 And my hubby 🙂 🙂 Big T and Little T are both well. I joined them for dinner virtually. Oh, technology…how I love thee.

I gave my presentation today, and it went well. I might have even set up a potential collaboration. Then at dinner, I met more cool people. Scientists. And a couple of spouses. We ended up just hanging out all evening.

The only thing I have not done here is use the pool or play at the beach. Goals for tomorrow: Go to lots of talks, eat only one dessert (no more!), got to the pool AND the beach, do some reading.

And I am learning SO much. And I have met a few cool people.

“I wasn’t talking to you mommy, I was talking to daddy”

This particular statement coming from Big T’s mouth made my blood pressure rise. I get that daddy is his hero. I get that. But I will not tolerate rudeness from my own kid. Unfortunately, I was driving so the best I could do was give him a super stern talking to. I seem to be using The Mommy Voice a lot nowadays.

We decided that Mr T would stay home instead of coming with me to the International Conference. It was just too complicated to have him come with me. Plus, Little T (and Mr. T) appear to be coming down with something. Little T was not 100% his usual cheery self today, and he has been sleeping a lot. Plus he had a low grade fever this morning. Mr. T also has a low grade fever. Come to think of it, I may be getting something too…I have a massive cold. Should be fun flying while stuffy. ugh.

I never did get around to getting a flu shot this year.

To prepare the family for my absence, I decided to make a huge batch of one of Big T’s favorite dishes – Jollof Brown Rice. It’s delicious and it freezes well. Mr. T likes it too. If nothing else, they can eat this all day 😉

Recipe for Jollof Brown Rice:

Saute 1 medium onion (chopped) in 3/4 cup canola oil. Med. high heat, about 3 minutes until onions are tender. Add 1 15oz can of tomato sauce, and 1/2 6oz can tomato paste. Mix well until smooth. Add 1/2 teaspoon italian seasoning mix (I know, right. it works), 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper, 1.5 teaspoons salt, and 1/4 tablespoon black pepper. It  can be more or less spicy to taste. We like it on the spicier side. Mix well, and bring to a simmer on medium heat for a couple of minutes. Then, stir in 4 cups Uncle Bens Brown Rice. Add 4 cups chicken broth and 2 cups water. Stir. Bring down heat to medium-low and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour until all the liquid has evaporated. Stir well to mix. serve with chicken or beef and a side of veggies. ENJOY.

I am looking forward to my conference. I cannot lie. Sun, Beach, Science…

“Take my clips off, I’ll fix the window”

Seriously, I hate cars. Always one problem or another. Today is probably the coldest day we have had so far this winter. This morning was around 25F. Well my car decided it would be the perfect morning for the motor rolling the driver’s side window to break. I think it froze. Anyway, the glass went down and did not go back up. Big T was so sweet and helpful about it.

He goes “Mommy, is the window broken? Take my (car seat) clips off, I’ll fix the window”

I wish it were that easy, kid.

I drove to work with the heat on full blast, and I was still freezing 🙁 I called Mr T (my husband), crying on the phone and ranting about how I never wanted to use this car again, and how I would love to get rid of the car.

Now I have to shell out $$$ to fix it. It’s not really something I can ignore.

OK, I need to be thankful… I need a thankful post to balance out the complaining…

I am thankful that my family is healthy, that I actually have a car, and that I was eventually able to pull the glass back up (although it will probably slide back down again). I am thankful this happened on a Friday, and I am thankful that my co-worker (who had no idea I was having a challenging morning) brought me a blueberry muffin and it was waiting for me on my desk when I got into work. I really like blueberry muffins.

“That’s not the moon, that’s a circle”

We had a full moon last night. A big, beautiful, bright full moon. Since the moon wasn’t its typical “moon-shaped” semi-circle, my poor little boy was all confused. So, yesterday in his world, there was no moon. Just a big weird circle in the sky.

Ohhhhh…today is shaping up to be awesome in so many ways. I gave a practice talk to my lab first thing this morning. I will be presenting my research data at an International Conference in less than a week. The practice itself was sub-awesome, but it is still a work in progress. It will be perfect by next Wednesday. Also, I may have figured out a way for the hubby to go on said International Conference with me. Trying not to get too excited in case it does not work out. But I am crossing every finger and toe in my body, and saying extra prayers that it does work out.

Now the big news – A lot of my excitement today stems from the positive conversation I had with The Boss. The Boss has upgraded my authorship status on the paper we will be submitting next week. I will now be a co- first author!! This is SUPERB news. If the paper gets accepted (like we think it will – we are on our third revision) this may propel me into super-stardom. After all, we are talking about high-impact research in a high-impact journal. OK, not really super-stardom, but it will be a massive boost to may CV, and may make it that much easier to find a job when the time comes.

“Noooooooo! I don’t wanna go to school”

You and me both, kid.

After a long weekend – no pre-school/daycare/work since 3pm last Wednesday – Monday morning proved to be a bit difficult.  First of all, last night I stayed up waaaaaaay past my bedtime last night so getting out of bed this morning was challenging.

I made it to work eventually, and parking was actually not a nightmare.  On to saving the world one experiment at a time.

It’s fun to hear everyone’s thanksgiving stories. So far, I have heard the stomach flu story, the drunken husband story, the no-turkey thanksgiving story and the black friday shopping story. I must say, my Thanksgiving weekend was pretty uneventful in light of what others had going on.

Today I want to accomplish a few things: Shop cyber monday deals (christmas gifts for the kids/hubby/in-laws) – jcpenney, gymboree, macy’s, oldnavy and target all have great deals today; do some key experiments; do something nice for the hubby; clear out my email inbox.

PS: I also hope to get out the christmas decorations. I LOVE that it is officially christmas season. I intend to enjoy every single day of it 🙂
