“We need to talk about my presents”

Christmas is not about the presents. At least this is what we are trying to teach Big T. I reminded him constantly that “we are celebrating Jesus’ birthday”. However, he was still captivated by the prospect of all the gifts. I admit, I enjoy opening presents too.

so… a few highlights of Christmas Season

1) Big T and Little T made out like Bandits! They both LOVED opening their presents. Of course, Little T was most interested in Big T’s new toys. That and the wrapping/boxes. He hardly even looked at any of the stuff bought specifically for him.

After they opened all their presents:

The aftermath

2) Mr T’s gifts to me were AWESOME!!! Dell inspiron mini (more blogging, yay!); 8GB ipod touch. Gifts from other family members were not so awesome. I kind of felt like an afterthought actually. Happens pretty much every year. Whatever. My Mr. T is a sweetie and more than makes up for all that. One thing though, Mr T is AWFUL at wrapping gifts. A blind person would do a better job. Seriously. Check it:

We made delicious coconut cupcakes

and I got an uuuuuuuugly shrek-head cookie jar at my lab gift exchange. Big T neeeded to have a pic of Shrek-head and Lightning McQueen:

all in all, it was a good time 🙂

“say da-da”

It was too cute. Big T was teaching Little T the fundamentals of language and communication. Big T had his arm around his baby brother, and tried to get him to say “da-da”. Little T just smiled and drooled. It really was such a sweet scene. My children, interacting with one another and there was no crying or yelling.

Work this week is going to be challenging, seeing as I am in holiday mode already. God help me!

I am listening to old school Christmas music on pandora (www.pandora.com) while I work. You know, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald… LOVE IT!!  This is totally making the boring job of updating  my lab notebook  a lot more bearable. I much would rather start new experiments, but  a) short work week…how much can I really accomplish experiment-wise and   b) I have to be responsible about keeping a good lab notebook. I don’t want to be one of those cautionary tales of how not to keep a lab notebook…

*pausing here to pat myself on the back for being such a good, organized scientist*

Speaking of lab notebooks, I came across this site from Swathmore College with advice/tips on how to keep a good lab notebook. http://www.swarthmore.edu/NatSci/cpurrin1/notebookadvice.htm some good advice there. I especially like the side-by-side testing of different pens. Someone actually took the time to do all that. And I think it’s kinda cool.

So there ya go…3 random thoughts in one blog post.

“I sure had fun”

Big T had a fun time at The Boss’ Christmas party. This had everything to do with the fact that The Boss has 2 young sons and their play room (which she was gracious enough to allow us to use) was chock-full of every little boy toy imaginable (hehe. I know, I said boy toy. But y’all now what I meant). Big T was in heaven in that play room. He did not want to leave. On the way home, he lets out this HUGE sigh, followed by “I sure had fun tonight”. It was too cute!

What a whirlwind weekend. The Christmas musical was way fun, and my dear friend Cheryl who played the lead role was phenomenal! I had a great time doing it too :). I got to hang out with friends while at the same time doing something that honors God. So yay!

Tomorrow – work; send out Christmas cards (late! I know. I may not even do them, but I already bought a bunch so I might as well try); Tackle that ever growing mountain of laundry. Seriously, where does it come from??? Maybe we should all be nudists, then I won’t have to deal with all that laundry. Ah crap, I forgot…nudist in winter = very bad idea.

Oh, and I’m going to attempt to make Christmas cookies. I think I’ll make shortbread.

“Is it weekend?”

TGIF!!! Apparently, Big T lives for the weekend too.

I am happy to announce that Little T is on the mend, and I am back on track at work. I even successfully cloned some Really Important DNA. I tested 17 clones and all 17 were correct. This is terrrific, since there was a time in the not-too-distant past I tested 80 clones and only 2 were correct. Overall, I am happy with how the week went.

Remember when I talked earlier about ebates? (see here)…Well, I got a check for $11.40 in the mail. That’s right, I got my cash back!!!! I will be using ebates again, that’s for sure 🙂

Christmas is in a week!!!! Crazy, huh?  This got me thinking…what are your favorite holiday/Christmas movies?

I like Love Actually, Trading Places and Elf. It might be time to bust out Trading Places. I haven’t watched that one in a while. If you haven’t seen it, definitely consider renting. It has Eddie Murphy (back when he was still very funny) and Dan Aykroyd. HILARIOUSNESS!!!

Tonight, I have a tiny, tiny, tiny part in our Church’s Christmas Musical.  I am excited about it 🙂

“Is it Christmas?”

Big T has been asking for a particular toy race car, and we told him that maybe we would give it to him as a Christmas present. Since then, he has been asking several times a day “Is it Christmas?” Not yet, honey. Guess this is a good opportunity to teach him that Christmas is not all about the gifts.

My weekends are generally spent catching up on life – laundry, grocery shopping, meal planning, and of course, some social events have to be thrown in. This weekend is particularly stressful, since I will be leaving for International Conference on Tuesday and I won’t be back till Saturday. This means everything has to be in order for whoever is taking care of the kids. I am going to miss my babies, but I recognize that this is an opportunity  I cannot pass up – the location is AMAZING (it is at a swanky resort), I will be giving a talk (great chance to impress people in the field), and hopefully I will get a chance to meet leaders in the field (who knows, this might lead to future job opportunities).

Anyone with ideas on how to help the little ones deal with my absence will be greatly appreciated. Actually, maybe OUR absence, since we are trying to get Mr T as a guest at the International Conference. Like I said – SWANKY RESORT!!

Trying not to stress out over everything I still need to accomplish before leaving. Not.enough.hours.in.the.day…
